Taking The LPN Entrance Exam

Taking the LPN entrance exam, or the NLN PAX-PN, is a rite of passage for most people who want to become licensed practical nurses. The exam follows a specific format, and consists of verbal, math, and science questions. Students utilize different strategies for test review, and each nursing school will have its own score requirements, for students who want to be considered for admission.

Most educational programs require potential LPNs to pass the entrance test. The NLN PAX-PN has three sections: a verbal section, consisting of sixty questions; a mathematics section, consisting of forty questions; and a science section, consisting of sixty questions. Students are given one hour to complete each section of the test, and all questions are multiple choice. The test may be taken via computer, or with paper and pencil.

The verbal section covers reading comprehension and word knowledge. The math portion utilizes basic calculations and word problems, covering the subject areas of algebra, geometry, graphs, conversions, and applied mathematics. The science section includes questions on earth science, physics, chemistry, and general biology. The entire test must be taken in one sitting, so the three sections may not be taken separately.

Many students invest in a high-quality pre-entrance test review book. A book will help students to get used to the format of the questions, and the type of questions that will be on the test. Books also offer suggestions and problem-solving techniques. For facts that have to be memorized, many students study by utilizing pre-printed flash cards, or by making their own flash cards.

Also, taking practice exams online helps students who are taking the computer test the opportunity to take the test under realistic exam conditions. The majority of schools require nurses to score at the fiftieth percentile or above. Despite their best efforts, some nursing students fail to reach the fiftieth percentile. Some schools allow students to retake the test once, to be considered for admission to the upcoming semester. However, some programs require students to reapply for the school, and to retake the exam, at the start of a later semester.

In addition to an exam, nursing schools will have other entrance requirements. Traditional requirements include submitting applications and fees, as well as transcripts or proof that they have a high school diploma. Some schools also require nurses to complete an essay, explaining their reasons for wanting to become a nurse. Students may give themselves an edge in the application process if they volunteer in a hospital or clinical setting.
